Bonded Stripes – Zebra Mother and Foal

As I sat down to paint this piece, I couldn’t help but imagine the scene unfolding in the wild—a mother zebra standing watchful, her foal nestled close, learning the ways of the world under her careful gaze. Each brushstroke became part of their story, every stripe hand-painted to capture the uniqueness of their bond, just as no two zebras ever share the same markings.

There’s something powerful about a mother’s quiet strength, the way she guides and protects without hesitation. I wanted to bring that to life in this piece—the gentle bow of her head, the way her foal leans in with trust and curiosity. The deep contrast of their stripes was both a challenge and a joy to paint, giving them movement and depth, as if they could step right off the shelf and into the golden grasses of the savanna.
